Marchand breaks 400m IM world record, McIntosh shines in 200m butterfly
SINGAPORE, April 20
– On the second day of the 2026 World Aquatics Championships test event in Singapore, French star Léon Marchand shattered his own world record in the men's 400m individual medley, clocking 4 minutes and 2.12 seconds – improving on his previous mark of 4:02.50 set in 2023.
The 22-year-old Marchand was ahead of the world‑record pace in all four strokes (butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke, freestyle), splitting 55.32 seconds for the final 100m freestyle leg. "I felt great before the race. The pool design and the atmosphere here helped a lot. I hope to go under 4:02 at the World Championships proper," he said.
In the women's 200m butterfly, Canadian teenage sensation Summer McIntosh won gold with a time of 2:03.87, the third‑fastest performance in history. The 17‑year‑old said after the race that the test event was mainly about adapting to the tropical climate, and her target at the World Championships is the gold medal. Americans Regan Smith and Australian Brianna Throssell finished second and third, respectively.
