🎾 WTA Rome shocks continue: Sabalenka and Paolini both fall

ROME – The ongoing WTA 1000 Italian Open has seen a flurry of upsets. Top seed and world No.1 Aryna Sabalenka, after winning the first set, was stunned 2-6, 6-3, 7-5 by Romania’s Sorana Cîrstea, exiting before the round of 16. It was Cîrstea’s first career win over a world No.1. Reigning champion Jasmine Paolini battled for 2 hours and 41 minutes but fell 6-4, 6-7(5), 3-6 to Belgium’s Elise Mertens, who saved three match points in the second set to complete the comeback.

On the ATP side, upsets also occurred. Fourth seed Felix Auger‑Aliassime and fifth seed Ben Shelton both lost. Argentina’s Mariano Navone beat Auger‑Aliassime 7-6(4), 7-6(5), while qualifier Nikoloz Basilashvili defeated Shelton 6-4, 6-7(5), 6-3. World No.1 Jannik Sinner, however, stayed on course, beating Austria’s Sebastian Ofner 6-3, 6-4 to extend his Masters winning streak to 29 matches.
