Visit Malaysia Year 2026 Officially Begins

Sarawak Welcomes First Tourists at Kuching International Airport

· Lifestyle 生活

Visit Malaysia Year 2026 (VMY2026) officially began on 1 January 2026, with Sarawak marking the occasion through a welcoming ceremony held at the international arrival hall of Kuching International Airport (KIA). The event symbolized the start of a new chapter for Malaysia’s tourism industry and Sarawak’s readiness to receive visitors from around the world.

The ceremony was officiated by Sarawak Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts, Dato Sri Abdul Karim, who emphasized that Sarawak is fully prepared to welcome both domestic and international travelers as the tourism year begins.

Nationwide Launch with Coordinated Welcome Events

According to the minister, the VMY2026 launch was conducted simultaneously across 55 major entry points and selected locations nationwide, all taking place on 1 January 2026. These coordinated events were designed to generate early momentum and global visibility for Malaysia’s tourism campaign.

In Sarawak, welcoming activities were carried out at nine key entry points, covering air, land, and border crossings. These included:

  • Kuching
  • Miri
  • Sibu
  • Bintulu
  • Tebedu
  • Biawak
  • Sungai Tujuh

Among these, the ceremony at Kuching International Airport played a particularly important role, serving as a symbolic gateway and the first point of contact for many travelers entering Sarawak.

Cultural Performances Showcase Sarawak’s Diversity

Prior to the minister’s arrival, invited guests and members of the media gathered at the international arrival hall, where they were treated to cultural performances showcasing Sarawak’s rich and diverse heritage.

These performances were presented to welcome passengers arriving on domestic and international flights from Subang, Kuala Lumpur, and Singapore, offering visitors an immediate glimpse into Sarawak’s unique cultural identity. The warm reception aimed to leave a strong first impression and set the tone for visitors’ experiences throughout their stay.

Creating a Lasting First Impression for Visitors

Dato Sri Abdul Karim noted that the welcoming ceremony at KIA reflects Sarawak’s commitment to hospitality and quality visitor experience. Whether travelers are visiting for leisure, returning home, or visiting family and friends, Sarawak aims to ensure that every arrival begins with a positive and memorable experience.

He added that these welcoming initiatives are part of a broader effort coordinated by Tourism Malaysia to promote VMY2026, build excitement early, and reinforce Malaysia’s position as a preferred travel destination in the region.

An Open Invitation to the World

Taking the opportunity to address travelers and the international community, the minister extended an open invitation to visit Sarawak during Visit Malaysia Year 2026.

With its distinctive cultures, lush natural landscapes, rich biodiversity, and well-known hospitality, Sarawak stands ready to offer visitors meaningful and authentic travel experiences.

“As we begin Visit Malaysia Year 2026, we welcome all domestic and international visitors to Sarawak—and of course, to Malaysia,” he said.
