Cryptocurrency is no longer a fringe payment option in the United States. According to a new PayPal survey, nearly 40% of US merchants now accept crypto at checkout, marking a major shift in how businesses view digital assets.

Even more telling, almost 90% of merchants said customers have already asked them about paying with crypto. What started as curiosity has turned into real demand.

“Crypto payments are moving beyond experimentation and into everyday commerce,”
said May Zabaneh, PayPal’s VP and GM.
“Once businesses start accepting crypto, they see real value.”

The survey, conducted in October among 619 payment-strategy decision-makers, found that:

  • 84% of merchants believe crypto payments will become mainstream within five years
  • Adoption is highest among large enterprises
  • 32% of midsized and 34% of small businesses already accept crypto
  • Among merchants that accept it, crypto now accounts for 26% of total sales

Major brands such as Starbucks, Walmart, and Home Depot are already on board.

Young Shoppers Are Driving the Shift

The biggest force behind this transition is generational.

Millennials and Gen Z are proving to be the most crypto-savvy shoppers, pushing businesses to adapt. Adoption is strongest in industries where digital-native users dominate:

  • Gaming
  • Digital goods
  • Hospitality & travel
  • Online services

These sectors benefit the most from crypto’s strengths:
instant settlement, global reach, and lower cross-border costs.

PayPal itself launched a crypto checkout tool in July, allowing US merchants to accept payments from over 100 cryptocurrencies, signaling that even traditional financial giants see crypto as inevitable.

Still, friction remains. Around 90% of merchants said they would try accepting crypto if it were as simple as credit cards.

“Interest isn’t the problem; understanding is,”
said Stu Alderoty, President of the National Cryptocurrency Association.
