France edges Netherlands with last-gasp Mbappé penalty

PARIS, April 22

– In a blockbuster Group G clash of the 2026 FIFA World Cup European qualifiers, defending champions France snatched a 2-1 victory over the Netherlands at the Stade de France, courtesy of a stoppage‑time penalty from captain Kylian Mbappé.

The Netherlands opened the scoring in the 38th minute through Cody Gakpo’s long‑range strike. After the break, France leveled in the 62nd minute when Antoine Griezmann assisted Ibrahima Konaté for a powerful header. Deep into added time, substitute Ousmane Dembélé was brought down by Denzel Dumfries inside the box, and the referee pointed to the spot. Mbappé calmly sent the goalkeeper the wrong way and slotted home to seal the dramatic winner.

With the result, France remain top of the group with a perfect 15 points from five matches, while the Netherlands sit second on 10 points. The two sides will meet again in the penultimate round of group stage this October.
