The Ethereum Foundation is realigning its priorities, putting greater emphasis on user experience and layer-1 scaling solutions. This strategic shift follows a leadership reshuffle aimed at allowing Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin to focus on research and innovation.
Vitalik Buterin Steps Back to Focus on Innovation
On April 21, Tomasz Stańczak, co-executive director of the Ethereum Foundation, revealed how the organization has evolved since the March 17 leadership change. Stańczak explained that the new structure frees Buterin from day-to-day operations and crisis management, enabling him to drive long-term breakthroughs in Ethereum’s ecosystem.
“Each time Vitalik shares insights or communicates a direction, he accelerates major long‑term breakthroughs,” Stańczak noted in his post on X.
Stańczak emphasized that Buterin’s recent contributions have rejuvenated the Ethereum community, helping refocus efforts on its core values.

Focus on Privacy and Performance
Since stepping back from operational duties, Buterin has published significant proposals on Ethereum’s privacy and efficiency:
- April 11: Buterin outlined a privacy roadmap suggesting default anonymization of user transactions.
- April 20: He proposed improvements to the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) contract language, targeting faster and more efficient execution.
These proposals are intended to spark community debate and inspire new research directions, Stańczak explained. While Buterin’s ideas hold significant influence, they are open for refinement or rejection by the broader Ethereum development community.
Near-Term Goals: Scaling and User Experience
Looking ahead, the Ethereum Foundation will focus on near-term protocol upgrades. Key priorities include:
- Layer-1 scaling improvements.
- Enhanced support for Layer-2 scaling solutions.
- User experience upgrades, particularly in interoperability.
These will be addressed in upcoming updates such as Pectra, Fusaka, and Glamsterdam.
Stańczak highlighted that the foundation is not abandoning long-term projects, with initiatives like next-generation execution and consensus layers still under active development.
“Posts from our top researchers help some of them to ship within one or two years,” he added.
As of now, the Ethereum Foundation has not provided additional comments.
