Civilization 7: Unraveling the Mystery of Building a Port

As the Exploration Age in Civilization 7 draws to a close, players face a significant change in their resource management. A large number of resources transform into Factory Resources, compelling players to build Factories to make use of them. Consequently, during the Modern Age, players often find themselves constructing numerous Rail Stations to acquire Factory Resources for their settlements.

Yet, a challenge emerges when players attempt to connect two Rail Stations that are separated by water. This guide is here to show gamers the way to overcome this obstacle and connect Rail Stations, regardless of the ocean barrier between them.

Can You Build Factories in Distant Land Settlements or Islands?

In Civilization 7, for a settlement to have a Factory, it must be connected to the Capital by railroad. But if players have settled in a Distant Land and didn't relocate their Capital during the Age Transition or have chosen an island settlement, reaching the Capital by land becomes impossible. This lack of land connection prevents the creation of roads and, subsequently, railroads.

To bridge the gap between Rail Stations separated by water, gamers need to build a Port in both their Capital city and the settlement in question. This simple yet crucial step unlocks the ability to build Factories and slot Factory Resources in island and Distant Land settlements.

Building a Port in Civilization 7 starts with researching the Steam Engine Technology. Fortunately, this technology is available right at the beginning of the Modern Age.

Once the Steam Engine Technology is acquired, players can build a Port provided that their settlement has at least one Coast tile adjacent to land. Beyond facilitating the connection of a water - separated settlement to the Capital, the Port offers several advantages. It increases the number of resources that can be assigned to the settlement, generates a base of 5 Gold, and bestows an additional +1 Gold for each Navigable River Terrain, Coastal Terrain, or Wonder adjacent to it. Once the Port is completed, gamers can finally proceed to build a Factory in their settlement.
