Soriano's 0.24 ERA through first six starts marks best pitching start in 112 years
ANAHEIM, April 22
– Los Angeles Angels right-hander José Soriano is authoring one of the most astonishing season starts in MLB history. In Wednesday's game against the Toronto Blue Jays, Soriano threw five scoreless innings, extending his season-opening scoreless streak to 24⅔ innings and lowering his ERA to a mind‑boggling 0.24.
Since the league began officially tracking earned runs in 1913, Soriano's ERA through his first six starts is the lowest for any pitcher over that span. No pitcher had ever posted an ERA below 0.30 in his first six starts of a season. Meanwhile, Blue Jays' Japanese slugger Munetaka Murakami continued his own historic run, homering for a fifth consecutive game – becoming only the second Japanese-born player (after Shohei Ohtani) to accomplish that feat.
Angel Mike Trout also hit a home run in the game. Soriano's dominant performance powered the Angels to a 7-3 victory, snapping a four-game losing streak. After the game, Soriano credited his offseason work: "I'm just focusing on each batter, each inning. I'm not thinking about the record."
