🧓 Is 44-Year-Old Alonso Really Thinking of Retiring?
With 419 Grand Prix starts, Fernando Alonso is by far the most experienced driver in Formula 1 history. At 44 years old, retirement rumors are never far behind—but Aston Martin has firmly dismissed recent speculation about a possible 2027 exit.
Recent comments Alonso made to AS hinted that 2026 could be his final year—but only if the car is good enough.
“If the car is weak, I might go one more year just to end on a positive note. If the car is strong, 2026 will probably be my last year,” Alonso said.
That cryptic message set off a wave of speculation about his future. However, Aston Martin’s new team principal Andy Cowell has since denied any retirement discussions have happened behind the scenes.
🛑 “No Conversations About Retirement,” Says Aston Martin Boss
Cowell made it clear in an interview with Motorsport.com that Alonso hasn’t shared any formal plans about retiring:
“I've not had any conversations with him about that,” he said. “His conversations with me over the past year have been all focused on 2026.”
Cowell also emphasized that both Alonso and teammate Lance Stroll are fully committed to Aston Martin’s long-term vision:
“We’re just pushing hard to make sure that we're in the best possible place for 2026, 2027 and beyond.”
🔄 2026: A Crucial Turning Point
The 2026 F1 season marks a major technical reset with new chassis and engine regulations. For Alonso, that season represents both a final shot at victory and possibly a personal career milestone.
Despite being on a 218-race winless streak, Alonso remains a fierce competitor. Cowell even suggested Alonso’s age is a competitive advantage:
“His age seems to be a strength! Fernando has shown that he's a phenomenal competitor.”
🔮 2027 and Beyond?
Although Alonso hinted at the possibility of 2026 being his swan song, his statements are far from definitive. The takeaway? Nothing is certain yet. If Aston Martin delivers a strong car, we might see Alonso bow out on a high. If not, the man himself says he’ll consider pushing one year further.
Given his hunger and performance in recent years, don’t be surprised if he’s still racing into 2027.
